Developments:
Unprotected sex is the norm in Hlabisa. By the time women reach the age of 20, most have been pregnant at least once. Less than one quarter have ever used a male condom during sex, with fewer than 1 in 10 using one in their most recent sexual encounter. HIV prevalence rates in antenatal clinics in the area are over 40 per cent, and AIDS is responsible for three quarters of female deaths between the ages of 15 and 44.
