Developments:
Mtubatuba, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa: Nobody underestimates the crime problem here. At the Africa Centre for Health & Population Studies, where I'm doing some consultancy work, workers have to be out of the building by 5.30pm so they won't travel home in the dark. On my first day, I had a lecture on carjacking from the head of security. Most carjackings result in your car being driven away and over the border to Mozambique or Swaziland. Around 5 per cent, however, end in the driver being shot. Traffic lights and intersections are favourite hijacking spots, and at the main intersection on the 10-kilometre stretch of road between the Centre and Mtubatuba town, 5 security guards with machine guns are to be seen in the morning and afternoon rush hours keeping an eye on Africa Centre staff.
