A colleague last week attended the funeral of the son of Mangosuthu Buthelezi, head of the Inkatha Freedom Party. "I reach out to all other people who have died of HIV/AIDS. My son did," Buthelezi said in his speech. "I feel the pain of any father and mother across our land at this tragic hour of history. I feel the pain for the many children of Africa who are now dying an untimely and terrible death." President Thabo Mbeki's latest public statement on AIDS was, "I've never known anyone who died of AIDS... I honestly haven't."
