Developments:
350,000 out of Botswana's 1 million population are infected with HIV. 100,000 are thought to be in need of antiretroviral treatment. In January 2002, the government committed to providing such treatment free, but so far only 6,300 people have received the drugs. 4,300 of these have received their treatment from one hospital in Gaborone. Reaching rural populations is proving enormously difficult.
